Tips To Find The Best Self Propelled Mower

You may not think that a self-propelled lawn mower is a big deal, but I can tell you from experience that they are! Here's why: when it comes to cutting grass, the less work I have to do, the better. The rough terrain around my property makes pushing a lawn mower up hills and over bumps an exhausting task for this old man. When my neighbor was kind enough to give me his old self-propelled mower, he saved me from having to run back and forth with each pass of the blade. It made all the difference in how much time it took to cut my front yard.

And because I didn't have as far to push or pull a heavy machine across uneven ground, there were no ruts or trenches left behind. Having a self-propelled lawn mower is definitely an expense that is worth the time and effort I save every week! So, if you think a self-propelled lawn mower would save you some work around your home, read on to find out what type may be right for you. There are basically three types of self-propelled lawn mowers: rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. When shopping for a new model, keep these differences in mind as they pertain to safety and control when operating your machine.

Rear Wheel Drive - A walk behind with rear wheels driven by the engine results in the least amount of traction but allows mowing alongside slopes, ditches or areas of steep inclines. Front-Wheel Drive - Wheel drive is powered by the cutting blade on a diagonal shaft and a heavier machine with better traction options on hills and rough terrain. All Wheel Drive - Mowers with two back wheels driven by the cutting blade have increased stability on hills and rough terrain as well as on slopes. Regardless of which type you choose, all self-propelled mowers have some type of height adjustment system. In general, most models allow up to four different heights from one inch to three inches high. Look for a model that has an easy mechanism for locking in desired cutting height so that you'll have no problem finding the correct mowing position every time. You may also want to consider how wide of a path your new self-propelled mower will be able to cut at one time.

Most models are between 21 and 22 inches wide, with all-wheel drive models offering an average width of 30 inches or more. If you have a larger lawn than most people, you will definitely want to find the widest possible model for maximum efficiency. When shopping for any type of lawn equipment, it's easy to become overwhelmed by options. The price usually reflects certain features that can make life easier or do just as good of a job as some that cost twice as much.

So before you set a budget for your self-propelled mower, decide how much you can afford to spend and what you expect from the machine. I have watched many people buy high-end models that they quickly regretted as those machines were beyond their comfort level or simply too complicated to use. I'm a big fan of simple things that do a great job on any property size!
